Six Tips to Protect you Mental Health on Social Media

SCREEN TIME AVERAGES:

• Adults: 3.25 Hrs/Day 1,186 Hrs/Year & 50 DAYS/year!!! • Teens: 7 Hrs/Day 2,592 Hrs/Year & 104 DAYS/year!!!

It is shocking to consider how much time many of us spend engaged with our technology, especially due to the findings that indicate that increased screen time relates directly to a decrease in our mental health . For example, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania found that increased screen time was related to increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and sleep problems.

Therefore, to increase mental health awareness, I have compiled a list of a few things we can do to protect our mental health while on our screens, and more specifically, our social media accounts:

  1. Take a Break.

  2. Remind yourself that not everything is as perfect as it seems.

  3. Choose positive communities and content on social media.

  4. Spend time with friends (even virtually!).

  5. Set a time, or better yet, use apps that track and monitor the time you spend on certain apps.

  6. Ask for help when you feel overwhelmed!
